Play OverviewPlay Overview

The Lamplighters League (2023) is a tactical strategy game where a team of cartoony misfits use their unique abilities to outwit enemies. Play mixes real-time infiltration and turn-based tactical combat where every character matters if you are going to come out on top. It's a fresh take on the turn-based tactics genre that requires some (re)learning but rewards you with detailed and flexible battles well worth the investment.

In an alternate-history world of the 1930s, you and your team must take on a tyrannical cult on the cusp of world domination. You choose your ragtag team, ensuring a good mix of complementary abilities. Each team member comes with their own quirks and personality that play into the character-driven story in intriguing ways.

The Lamplighters League shares a basic structure with other turn-based tactics games but also innovates. For example, it offers the ability to switch back and forth between your team to interleave their actions in advantageous ways. It also includes real-time stealth elements that need an approach all of their own.

As you progress you learn how each map offers bonus missions that are important to explore before the main target. Clearing these out first contributes to escape routes and lets you pick off isolated enemy reinforcements. Then there are the Recon missions that are important to get informed about the enemy, patrol patterns and terrain. In many cases, you can decide to avoid fights and simply escape once the job is done.

The result is a game where the strategy plays into the narrative in unusual ways. The more characters that join you, the more you learn about their interwoven backstories and the world you find yourself in. This, and the well-judged turn-based battles, makes for a tactics game that stands with the best of them.
